Vega Alta promotes the rehabilitation process of inmates with a nursery program | Municipal

The mayor of Vega Alta, María Vega Pagán, announced today that she will sponsor the ornamental plant cultivation program of the Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (DCR) so that the city’s decoration is nourished by plants grown in the nurseries managed by the inmates , as part of your rehabilitation process.

He argued that promoting this effort will result in parents in custody of the state being able to reintegrate themselves into society in a profitable way. Also, that their parents feel the government support so that their confined children have a second chance in a productive way in the free community.

“The investment in resources from the treasury is minimal, but the dividends it produces by transforming lives are exceptional. Vega Alta recognizes that supporting this effort is promoting the social peace that Puerto Rico so badly needs, ”said the municipal executive.

In the company of the Correction Superintendent, Ana López, and Ruth Pagán, director of the Innovation Fund for Agricultural Development, the mayor visited the facilities of the Sabana Hoyos prison camp, where one of the nurseries is located.

There he was able to appreciate how it translates into a conciliatory effect on the spirit of the inmates, dedicating himself to the cultivation of ornamental plants. The agronomist Mariano Ramis explained all the germination and harvest processes.

The mayor said that this modality of offering in the DCR Training and Work Companies allows the inmate to come into contact with the techniques of cultivation, compost and fertilization of the land, as well as the visualization of patience and perseverance to achieve goals. both personal and in the task of sowing and harvesting.

“It seems to me a rewarding experience, both for the spirit and for the knowledge, to come into contact with the land, sow and achieve the fruit of the effort, which later pays for passive recreation in homes and public places,” he said.
