“VEF Rīga” basketball players beat “Rīgas Zeļlius” and enter the semi-finals of the LIBL

“VEF Rīga” won with the result 94:87 (20:24, 25:19, 25:19, 24:25) while visiting the Daugava Sports Hall and reached 2-0 in the series with two victories.

Sean Pipes stood out for the winners with 26 points, Robert Blum scored 18 points, Mari Gulb had 14 points, and Gregory Whittington had ten. Jaizek Lotti, who scored nine points in 19 minutes, ended the game due to an injury in the third quarter.

Toms Skuja played the best game of his career in “Rīgas Zeļļu” team, who scored 32 points, gave nine assists and accumulated 42 efficiency coefficient points. Jordan Hunter had 10 points and four steals, while Richard Daniel Hawk, Richard Berkold and Kamaka Hepp each had nine points, who also added seven rebounds.

The opponent of “VEF Rīga” in the semi-finals will be “Prometey” or “Ogre” from Slobožanska. “Prometey” is leading in this series with 1-0.

In the first match on Friday, “VEF Rīga” won with 87:72 and reached 1-0 in the series up to two victories. Already after the final whistle, both teams engaged in mutual acrimony.

In addition to the Riga-based Ukrainian team Slobojanskas “Prometey” in the LIBL this season, “VEF Rīga”, “Ventspils”, “Liepāja”, “Ogre”, “University of Latvia”, “Valmiera Glass”/”Vidzemes Augstskola” and “Rīgas Zeļļi” are competing. Estonia is represented in LIBL by Tallinn “Kalev”/”Cramo”, “University of Tartu”/”Maks & Moorits”, “Parnu Sadam”, “Viimsi”, Rapla “Avis Utilitas”, Tallinn “TalTech”/”Optibet”, “Keila” /”Coolbet” and Tallinn’s “Kalev”/”Snabb”.

In the main tournament, the teams competed in a two-round tournament, after which the best eight got the right to participate in the playoffs. In the quarter-finals and semi-finals, the winners are determined in a best-of-two series, but in the final, one match will be played on the court of the team that was in the highest place in the main tournament.

The best men’s basketball clubs of Latvia and Estonia played in a joint championship for the first time in the 2019 season, when 15 teams participated in the competition. “Ventspils” basketball players became the first winners of the league in the final four tournament.

Last season, in the final of the “Final 4” tournament, the basketball players of Slobojanska “Prometey” became the champions.
