Vedum: Will not be a gasoline crisis package

FRP leader Sylvi Listhaug moved out in Dagbladet earlier this spring and demanded that the government immediately take action to reduce fuel prices.

Minister of Finance Trygve Slagsvold Vedum (Sp) rejects a separate crisis package for petrol, but recently came up with the following objective: Norwegians should have more money in their wallets when today’s many crises are over, than they had when the crises took hold.

The measures the government will consider in relation to the violent petrol prices are budgetary measures, the Minister of Finance now reveals to Dagbladet.

– What about a crisis package in the form of tax relief or a compensation scheme, Vedum?

– Of course we will consider how fuel prices affect people. Then it will be in the budgets we take action so that people together come out better, says Vedum.

Evaluating measures

He also emphasizes that the government continuously monitors the price level of fuel.

When Russia invaded Ukraine, oil prices soared. As usual, fuel prices followed suit.

– Oil prices fluctuate a lot, and that makes the price of petrol unstable. The government fully understands that it is difficult for people, and we will consider measures here as well when we look at the budgets ahead, says Vedum.

In many places in the country, the petrol filler smells of almost 30 kroner a liter, and it is unsustainable, according to Sylvi Listhaug and Frp. She claimed that tax relief could be used to reduce prices considerably, and asked Vedum to find the toolbox.

– Do not understand the seriousness

Vedum will not promise any “petrol crisis package” similar to the one he was able to obtain for electricity prices before Christmas.

– We look at instruments all the time, and we follow the situation online. We have to look at the whole, says Vedum.

Sylvi Listhaug believes that Vedum engages in nice words, not important action.

– The government obviously does not understand how serious the situation is for companies that fear bankruptcy and people who are struggling to make ends meet, Listhaug tells Dagbladet.

– Ordinary people and companies that struggle with sky-high prices expect action from the government, not understanding from Minister of Finance Vedum and empty words that the government follows the situation closely, that they consider measures all the time and that they must look at the whole. It appears that the formerly so outspoken party leader in the Center Party lets the bureaucrats in the Ministry of Finance control both politics and what he should say, the FRP leader continues.
