After the painful end to the production of MINIs, which resulted in many employees losing their jobs, VDL Nedcar is given a new job for BMW in Born, Limburg. But this does involve far fewer jobs.
The company will assemble approximately 125,000 battery modules for electric cars from the German car brand until 2035. But that does not mean that the entire factory site has a purpose again and that all VDL Nedcar employees can work for BMW again.
Approximately 10 percent of the production capacity will be used for the new BMW order. Ultimately, dozens of employees will work on the assembly of BMW batteries. VDL is in discussions with other potential clients for similar assignments, the company said.
VDL has already tried to arrange new work for the production location in recent years. Because this was only successful to a limited extent, approximately thirteen hundred (permanent and hired) employees will lose their jobs from November. That is just under half of the total number of employees who were active in Born until recently.
