“I’ve spent my whole life telling people things that I think are useful. Whether I do it with a picture or something else doesn’t matter. I paint theatrical pictures because I’ve done several things all my life. : theater, cinema and television, I just change theatrical means with paint, with another artistic means to express the same idea, my head is populated with many images.
It’s just my imagination. All my life I have done the same thing – I have shared ideas and my opinion about certain phenomena or processes in our country and in general about human relations. That’s what excites me. “

From March 17 to April 5, 2022 in the exhibition hall of Art Gallery Le Papillon the latest paintings of Vasil Vassilev – Zueka, united by the theme “My Heroes” are guests. An exhibition that tells in color and image about the ideas, thoughts about people and feelings of a beloved, recognized and very talented artist, expressing equally influential, both on stage or on the film site, and with the expressive means of painting. Vasil Vassilev – Zueka is a self-taught artist, but an emblematic public and screen person – an actor, presenter and has been painting with passion since he was a child, to rediscover the power of the story in color and figures over the past few years.

His paintings are sincere, personal positions – sensitive reflections of the flooding of our spheres of events and situations that require alertness and humane response. Over the years, he has nurtured his love of painting with the works of a number of iconic European artists of the last century – Impressionists, Abstractionists, Cubists and Surrealists, such as Picasso, Modelliani, Miro, Dali and many others. others all retained a box of images and colors in his mind, influencing his outspoken artistic expression.

“My Heroes” are 22 first-person pictures, some provoked by various theatrical productions, literary images, ideas, dreams and problems, the analysis of which is required by the dynamics of emotions that accompany our existence over the past few years. Although one can feel the cheerfulness of his dominant pastel tone of color, each canvas hides both the romantic optimism and even idealism of the author and his personal position, his messages of humanity, love, empathy and artistry.

He often uses the recognizable face of Don Quixote not as the hero of Cervantes, but as an example to follow, and it seems that the author is often embodied in his image – the bearer of ideas. The paintings of Vasil Vassilev – Zueka are mostly figurative, illustrative with free and expressive drawing, demonstrating his emotional nature and his desire to embark on the experiment of various painting techniques. His style is recognizable, and the figures are often instinctively deformed and elongated, like his personal “Harlequins”, reminiscent of the magical effects and semantics of puppets in the theater.
