Vasco Club Officials and Players Complain About Refereeing Performance in Fluminense Derby

Coach Ramón Díaz and players from Vasco They complained a lot on the field, on Wednesday night, about the refereeing performance in the derby against Fluminense, which ended in a goalless draw at Maracanã. After the match, football director Alexandre Mattos and other representatives of the Vasco club went to the video referee’s room.

Mattos complains about the refereeing of the classic: “Vasco should perhaps be leading the championship”

Mattos, in fact, made a statement. He recalled that it was the fourth game in which, in his opinion, Vasco was harmed. He said that the club will no longer participate in the selection of judges in the next rounds and even suggested that a solution could be to call referees from outside Rio de Janeiro.

– It’s too bad to talk about arbitration. Vasco is avoiding it, following the protocol very calmly and politely, but this is the fourth game in a row. I went to see the VAR images. The entire committee, there must have been six professionals there, understood that it was a penalty. The ball would pass, he made the defensive action, and only he (the referee) thought that the arm was glued to the body. We have already had episodes against Bangu, Nova Iguaçu, Flamengo, today. Vasco was perhaps supposed to be leading the championship. Are you going to remove another referee from the championship? A gross error, which directly interfered with the result – said Mattos.

– When I arrived they told me that Vasco was very disadvantaged and, unfortunately, I see Vasco’s difficulties in Carioca. A little ill will with incompetence, but it’s too much. Vasco will no longer go to the federation to discuss referees, why? We are welcomed, we accept, we try to help, I even congratulate the president who tries to do something decent, but the human material is compromising all the work. Mistakes that shouldn’t happen, especially when you have VAR. He got lost in the criteria, started giving cards and when he needed to give them to André he didn’t have the courage. Our public complaint remains, we will do this on paper too, demand punishment. But that’s enough, it’s no longer possible – added the leader.

The club were angered by penalties not awarded and a disallowed goal. At the end of the game, Vasco athletes charged referee Bruno Mota Correia as he left the locker room.

– We did everything to win. A legitimate goal, a penalty that VAR didn’t call, another legitimate goal from me. Arbitration like this tarnishes a tournament as beautiful as Carioca, very prestigious, with very big clubs. Today they took a victory from us, we played a great match against a great rival, but anything we did today would be impossible to win. Regrettable, a disaster – declared Vegetti after the game.

At 49 min of the 1st half – Referee calls Vegetti for a foul on Felipe Melo

The possible penalty took place in the 49th minute of the first half. After a corner kick, Pablo Vegetti fell in the area, and the referee called a foul for the Argentine’s attack on Felipe Melo (video above).

1 minute into the 2nd half – Assistant points out offside and David’s goal is disallowed

On the way back from the break, one minute into the game, David received a ball from Paulo Henrique, touched Fábio’s shot and opened the scoring for Vasco. Assistant Wallace Muller Barros Santos pointed out the attacker’s offside, which was confirmed by video referee Carlos Eduardo Nunes Braga. Ramón Díaz complained a lot about the marking (video above).

In the 22nd minute of the second half, after pushing and shoving in Vasco’s attacking field, Thiago Santos and Medel received a red card. Several players received yellow in the confusion: Arias, Ganso and André, for Fluminense, and Vegetti and João Victor, for the Vasco side. Vasco claimed that André should have been sent off – the Fluminense midfielder pushed João Victor.

At 38 minutes of the 2nd half – Referee reviews possible penalty in favor of Vasco, but doesn’t score anything

At 37 minutes another complaint. Payet asked for a penalty after taking a free kick and the ball hitting Cano’s hand on the wall. The referee reviewed the move in VAR and decided not to award the penalty (video above). Then, at 52, Vegetti claimed to have been held by Guga after a cross, but nothing was scored. The Argentine still scored a goal in the 54th minute, but the referee pointed out a foul on the part of the striker.

Referee Bruno Mota Correia was chosen by Ferj after a meeting held with representatives from Fluminense and Vasco. His and VAR’s names were approved by both clubs.

Vasco issues note after the game

Vasco used the networks to issue a statement and complain about the arbitration. The club also cited the conditions of the Maracanã pitch. Check out the note in full.

IT IS REVOLTING to witness yet another spectacle tainted by yet another arbitration, for the fourth time in a row, at least, of very low quality and QUESTIONABLE.

IT IS SHAMEFUL to see the lawn of an important temple of football in POOR conditions of conservation and maintenance by its INCOMPETENT administrators.

IT IS SORRY to watch the decline of a championship that was once, and had everything to be, the biggest in Brazil.

A Wednesday to remain in the ashes of football history.

Vasco da Gama will take action and ask FERJ, among other demands, to suspend another referee from the championship, Mr. Bruno Mota Correia.

It also requests that FERJ send reports from the company hired to analyze the arbitration of all Vasco games in the championship.

Calls for immediate action in response to chronic problems with questionable officiating in the championship. It is urgent to take effective and immediate actions and no more meetings and promises.

We will resist. Against everything and everyone.

Fluminense also complains

Fluminense also complained about a controversial move. At the end of the first half, Renato Augusto kicked. The boa hit Medel’s arm. The Tricolores asked for a penalty, which was not awarded by the referee.

At 42 min of the 1st half – Renato Augusto kicks and the ball hits Medel
