Varoufakis: We may resign if people vote yes – 2024-08-29 22:11:42

/ world today news/ The government in Greece may resign if, in Sunday’s referendum, a majority of voters support accepting the creditors’ terms.

This was stated by Greek Finance Minister Yannis Varoufakis in an interview with Australian ABC radio.

Asked whether the government would resign if the people voted yes, Varoufakis said: “Yes, it is very possible that we will. But we will do it in the spirit of cooperation with whoever takes over the mandate after us.”

He also stressed that the referendum would take place and his party would continue to urge people to reject the creditors’ proposals. Nevertheless, a letter of the Prime Minister of Greece Alexis Tsipras, sent on Tuesday to the creditors, appeared in the media yesterday, in which Athens accepts their conditions, but under certain conditions.

“The reason we are supporting a ‘no’ vote is because we believe that even if there was even the slightest hint of the possibility that the proposal we presented would work and Greece would get out of its problems by reforming and moving forward, we would have accepted it. and we were not going to leave the matter to be decided by the people,” he said.
