variants in wastewater and patients in sheaves younger than elsewhere

Thing promised, thing due: the prefecture of Moselle unveiled this Friday the results of experimental techniques for analyzing wastewater carried out in the department.

Strong presence of variants in wastewater from treatment plants

Conducted since Sunday, the experiment was carried out under the leadership of Sdis (departmental fire and rescue service) of Moselle, reinforced by eleven members of the battalion of firefighters from Marseille. “The idea is to save time on a PCR test campaign in places that would have been identified thanks to these analyzes”, explained the sub-prefect Olivier Delcayrou. As such, three types of analyzes were carried out:

– samples on Monday and Thursday in 19 large wastewater treatment plants in Moselle. There is a stagnation between these two days, without exponential evolution. However, the strong presence of South African (45%) and British (21%) variants was screened. The same analyzes will be carried out every week.

– in 29 of the nursing homes installed on the Nancy-Thionville axis and not having experienced an episode of Covid-19, only the wastewater from one establishment was found to be positive, but the results of the residents’ tests were then found negative.

– in 35 schools in the department that were tested, on the surface this time, two showed traces of Covid-19 but all the tests carried out on the staff came back negative.

New vaccination centers and intensified controls

30,000 Pfizer vaccines are being delivered for Moselle. “The challenge is always to massively vaccinate caregivers, interveners with patients and people over 75 with co-morbidities”, insists Olivier Delcayrou. In addition to the ten vaccination centers and vaccination operations dedicated to specific sites or audiences, five new vaccination centers are opening in the coming days: already operational in the Legouest and Belle-Isle hospitals, they will be on Saturday in Freyming-Merlebach. and next week in Thionville and Montigny-lès-Metz.

The sub-prefect specified that the checks would continue to intensify with the fine weather: “Out of 30,000 checks carried out in Moselle since January 2, the date of the curfew at 6 p.m., the agents fined 3,238 people. : 2,695 for unauthorized travel, 368 for not wearing a mask and 38 establishments open to the public for non-compliance with the rules ”, he detailed.

In intensive care of patients younger than elsewhere

To date, 547 people are hospitalized in Moselle, including 86 in critical care. The bed occupancy rate is 95% and the incidence rate, higher than the national average, is 283. The average age of intensive care patients in Moselle is 55 years, ten years below the average. national age which is 65 years old. “It is a trend that we observe: a proportion of younger patients in intensive care in Moselle”, concedes Lamia Himer, regional delegate of the ARS Grand Est. Without being able to explain it to this day.
