When asked about the most dangerous headball players in the Bundesliga, very few observers think about Ruben Vargas. After all, the offensive player of FC Augsburg is barely 1.80 meters tall and usually twirls over the wings. On Friday he scored his fourth Bundesliga header against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
In the past and the current season there were two main goals that the Swiss contributed. Against Gladbach, the international became the proverbial ‘can opener’ for FCA, who hit a corner shortly after the restart after a weak first half. Measured over his two years in the Bundesliga, Vargas has a rate of 40 percent of goals per head. “Headball monster is a big word, but I’ve always had a good head and I actually like doing it,” the 22-year-old told the club’s media.
“We trained that in the morning”
“When I was little, my role model was Cristiano Ronaldo, he is a header monster,” continued Vargas. Today he looks more at Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain, whose specialty is certainly not in the air.
For the FCA, however, it is just right that Vargas can also intervene according to standards. “We practiced it that morning, and it worked out” reports the trained winger. With his first Bundesliga goal since the end of November, he wants to recommend himself for the starting XI. That was only one member of Vargas in the last eight games in Augsburg.
