Varda Space Industries Drug-Making Capsule Successfully Lands in Utah Desert

JAKARTA – Winnebago-1 (W-1), a plane containing a drug-making capsule, successfully landed on the Earth’s surface on Thursday, February 22 at 04.40 WIB. The plane landed in the Utah desert.

From the images shared by Varda Space Industries on platform X, the plane landed damaged due to the process de-orbit The aircraft made by Varda will be transported to a development facility for further analysis.

“Our capsule will be transported back to our facility in Los Angeles for post-mission analysis. “In addition, data collected throughout the capsule’s flight, including the portion where we reach hypersonic speeds, will be shared with the Air Force and NASA,” Varda said.

This landing in Utah indicated that Varda’s first experimental mission was successful. The aircraft was able to complete the mission even though the capsule’s return was delayed for eight months due to objections from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Process de-orbit first held on Monday, February 19. Rocket Lab, the company that helped carry out the launch, directed the plane to enter an orbital trajectory before the plane’s engines were started.

After going through four stages of engine combustion, the photons burn up in the atmosphere and the capsule, which has a heat shield, continues towards Earth. With the help of a parachute, the capsule finally fell on the Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR).

Inside the W-1 capsule, there is the drug ritonavir which is used to treat HIV/AIDS. The drugs developed in space will be sent to Improved Pharma, a pharmaceutical research company, for post-flight characterization.
