What is the appreciation that is made after the debut of VAR in League 1?
The truth that satisfaction. I think it is the word that would describe all these feelings, emotions that we have experienced since before the first and after the last game of this day. Because it has been all teamwork, not only by the League, but by CONAR, the referees, provincial referees who came to Lima for training, other areas of the federation that have also been involved, such as logistics. In short, all the work of a lot of people who did it with a lot of passion, a lot of commitment. Despite the fact that the possibility of an error is always latent in technology, everything went well. It was a tool that the referees could use, with correct decisions, to obtain fair results.
What kind of complications have you encountered after the VAR premiere?
It has not only been a job on the part of the federation, but it has also been a job on the part of the teams, because we made a previous visit to the stadiums where we encountered certain difficulties for the implementation of the system, and the clubs were asked the indications of the corrections that should be made for the proper implementation of the VAR. And the clubs also worked with that same commitment. They made the corrections, or in some cases, put up new towers for the transmission that allow the correct angle of focus of the cameras, so that the lines can be automatically detected by software and have a complete vision of the play. Something that sometimes in many stadiums could not be done.
Is it true that the VAR started with just four cameras?
It is not like this. It is true that the FIFA regulations require you to have at least four cameras for VAR operation: an open-angle center, another close-up center, and the two cameras that are on the marking line of the area. Those are the minimum four cameras that must exist in a stadium; however, in our games on date 1 of the Clausura, we have had seven cameras in eight of them and six cameras in one of them.
So, was there a bad communication (on the part of the FPF) when they announced the implementation of the VAR?
I think so, I don’t know if miscommunication or misinterpretation. The minimum that FIFA asks of you is four cameras. It’s not like we started with four cameras. We started with six in one game and seven in the other eight games.
Is the VAR here to stay?
We have VAR guaranteed, at least for this year, in all Clausura matches. In other words, the VAR is going to be applied in all the Clausura matches and in the final playoffs of Liga 1. And we have a contract with the current provider (MediaPro) for, if I’m not mistaken, four years. So, we have guaranteed the use of VAR until 2027-2028. And then the federation will see if we continue with them or another provider is hired. But the VAR is here to stay. Before there was a lot of distrust of using it in soccer. Today, in today’s world, it is unthinkable to have a football match without VAR.
Guillermo Salas, Alianza Lima coach, said that it was better to invest in sports infrastructure than in the use of VAR…
They are valid opinions. It is true and it is undeniable that in our country we suffer from sports infrastructure. What we are seeing and we are working on it is precisely a regulatory, legal framework that allows the clubs or the federation to help have a better sports infrastructure. Today, if a club wanted to invest in improving a soccer field or the dressing rooms of a state-owned stadium, it cannot do so. Because, if it did, most likely that field the following weekend will be used for neighborhood games or of another type that have nothing to do with professional soccer.
Is Matute enabled for the use of VAR?
Matute this week is passing the certification. It hasn’t passed yet because they had to make a few small modifications to the platforms, but mainly because the field is undergoing maintenance. And to pass the certification, the field has to be marked as if the game were to be played. But that is the main cause, it is not that it is not in a condition to be used.
What stadiums are not certified?
Well, Matute this week will be certified, as long as the field is ready and can be painted. Today it cannot be painted because it is undergoing maintenance. The Ivรกn Elรญas Moreno stadium in Villa de Salvador needs to work on the other platforms. And the Miguel Grado del Callao, which is a stadium that still lacks, in addition to the state of the field in which it is located. Let’s say that it is the stadium that will take the longest.
After the revocation of the precautionary measure and GOLPERร’s intention to broadcast some League 1 matches, can the use of VAR be affected?
According to what is stipulated, and what is even said by the regulations for the use of VAR, the VAR system hangs from the cameras of the official transmission (Liga 1 MAX). And the images it uses are the images or signals from the official broadcaster of the match broadcast (1190 Sports). It has to be that way.
Regarding the schedules of the Clausura matches and taking into account that it is necessary to move the teams for the use of VAR from one place to another, what criteria are taken into account when carrying them out?
We always try to get as far forward as possible in the programming, taking into account in the first place the programming of our clubs in international tournaments. Second, that they have the greatest days of rest. Today, an important variable is the VAR, because what we use are mobile units that move from stadium to stadium and connect to the mobile transmission unit. There is one that is moving through the north of the country, another that is moving through the south, another that is going to Tarapoto, another that is going to Huancayo, one that is staying in Lima. And that influences the programming of the matches. For example, we cannot put a game in Piura and Trujillo on the same day, because the VAR that will cover those two games will be the same. So, today that is a variable to take into account in programming as well.
With what record attendance at the stadiums did the Apertura close?
We have had more than one million one hundred thousand people in the stadiums at the Opening. I think it has set an attendance record and compared to 2018, which is the year with which we compare ourselves because from there League 1 began to function, the average collection per game has increased five times more. I think it is also a sign of a good job, not only by the league, but also by the clubs, in working on this rewarding experience.
How much collection has been achieved in the Opening?
Right now I don’t have the exact number at hand, but it is more or less 4.7 times more than in 2018. In other words, not only are more people going to the stadiums, but they are paying a higher ticket. A higher price. The Liga 1 product has been valued better.
Is there an estimate at the end of the year of how much the average attendance in public can be?
We believe that we will be around seven thousand people on average per game. That would be a record.
