Vapiano is insolvent, but these restaurants are not affected

Vapiano SE is insolvent. However, this is not the same for the chain’s individual restaurants in Germany.

Cologne – The restaurant chain Vapiano’s bankruptcy was announced on Friday. (TAG24 reported) The presumed consequence: All restaurants of the chain nationwide would be out of action. But that’s not correct.

It was true that several Vapiano SE restaurants had closed before the official measures were taken by the federal government, but that initially had nothing to do with Vapiano SE’s insolvency, but rather with the precautionary measures in connection with the corona virus, according to a Vapiano Speaker. As a result of the closures, insolvency would only occur.

The “United German Vapiano Partner e.V.” has now clarified in a press release how it is with the further Vapiano restaurant operation in Germany.

Should it come to an extreme in the near future, i.e. an insolvency procedure, not all Vapiano restaurants will be affected, the press release says.

Because what has fallen under the table is the following. Insolvency affects “only” Vapiano SE with the “associated” company owned Restaurants not the entire vapiano chain “.

The individual restaurants are largely managed independently by the Vapiano licensees. Accordingly, they act independently of their licensor Vapiano SE.

“We German Vapiano franchise partners are continuing our business activities detached from the financial situation of the franchisor,” the press release continues.

At the moment, of course, the restaurants are closed due to the corona crisis – like everyone else. Vapiano restaurants in the following cities are not affected by Vapiano SE’s insolvency:

  • Aachen
  • Bielefeld
  • Brunswick
  • Chemnitz
  • Darmstadt
  • Dortmund
  • Dresden
  • Duisburg
  • Göttingen
  • Hagen
  • Heilbronn
  • Ingolstadt

The principle of “franchise” can best be explained using the “sample” MC Donalds to explain.

First, there is a successful restaurant with a special and new business concept. In the case of McDonald’s, fast food that gets to the customer particularly quickly.

In order that other customers in other cities / countries can enjoy the food, further branches of the same restaurant with the same products and the same concept are opened.

In the case of a franchise company, branches are not simply opened by the “mother restaurant”, but so-called licenses are sold to local restaurateurs, who are then allowed to open a restaurant under the same name and the same successful business concept.

They pay a lot of money for the license and undertake to run their restaurants according to the stipulated standards of the “franchiser”, as well as to sell the same products.

That’s why all McDonalds look the same, sell the same products, and so on.

However, licensees are financially and legally independent of the franchiser and responsible for the success of their own restaurant.

In return, the licensees benefit from the previously established brand.
