The municipality of Sofia has withdrawn from key areas such as sports, culture and spirituality, and more and more children have health problems and are immobilized. This position was expressed by the candidate for mayor of the capital from MK “BSP for Bulgaria”, “LEVITSATA!” etc., Vanya Grigorova at a meeting with Stanislav Angelov – Peleto, representatives of the “Levski – Rakovski” Football Club Association and children from the sports club of the capital stadium of the same name. Diana Tonova, the candidate for mayor of Triaditsa district, also took part in the meeting.
Sofia cannot be awarded the title “European Capital of Sports” for 2024, and almost no funds are allocated for sports, commented Vanya Grigorova.
There are municipalities in Bulgaria that allocate 7-8% of their budget for sports, while in Sofia the percentage is much less than one, Peleto said.
“Unfortunately, there are many children today with problems such as asthma and obesity. It is obvious that the need for sports is painful,” said Vanya Grigorova and noted another serious danger: “It is obvious that children – due to the lack of sports – engage in many other activities that are, to put it mildly, on the verge of even the law. “We can hardly drive drug dealers out of the fences of schools when we have not created some opportunity for the development of young people,” she said.
According to her, when conditions are not created for children to engage in something creative, it is no wonder that many young people show destructive tendencies and vandalism. According to her, parents have also withdrawn from these activities due to impossibility, lack of time or funds.
“You do not have time. Parents, for the most part, are also heavily exploited in their workplaces. They don’t have time to rest, what is left to take their children to competitions and training every day or 4 times a week,” Grigorova noted and stated that all this is a consequence of the withdrawal of both the state and the municipality from all those activities related to the development of children’s talents.
“I really appreciate what you do. You are trying to some extent to compensate for the withdrawal of the authorities from these key activities,” she addressed the representatives of the sports association and added: “I hope we have the opportunity to help this happen much more adequately in all neighborhoods of Sofia, or at least in key places that are accessible so that children can walk there themselves and parents and grandparents don’t have to wonder how to get them physically active.”
The club expressed readiness and need for cooperation with the local authority. They explained that they support themselves by applying for various projects, but this is extremely insufficient. According to Stanislav Angelov, some additional funding, better communication and organization in order to work professionally is the most important thing.
“Activities in which we could collaborate with the municipality would greatly ease us and the work process, such as the municipality providing on-call doctors and security, instead of spending a resource from the sports clubs to hire them, a resource that would otherwise go to the children . “, noted Angelov, who is the director of the football club.
According to him, sport is prevention, it also develops many other human qualities – such as discipline, hierarchy, children learn to support each other and work in a team, not to betray their friends, sometimes they also feel betrayal, said the former football star.
“The developed skills are integrated into society, which is extremely important for the overall development of our country,” noted Stanislav Angelov – Peleto.
According to Diana Tonova, the candidate for mayor of the Triaditsa region, the success of an administration is measured by the degree of improvement in the quality of life.
“It is not enough to put a bench in front of the block at the request of the residents. It will be enough if you have solved the important social problems of the people – their children attend kindergartens, they do not break their legs on the sidewalks, they do not walk for hours to park near their home, they are not afraid to walk through dark subways,” said Tonova.
According to her, when the mayor has taken care of the young families and the elderly, then, with self-confidence for a job well done, he can also sit on the bench in front of the block. “The metaphor is for all the rulers of the Metropolitan Municipality. It is time to end this model of governance. It is time for Sofia to be managed with the aim of increasing the quality of life of the community”, said Diana Tonova categorically.
The program of Vanya Grigorova and Diana Tonova continued with a meeting with sympathizers in the crowded hall of the BSP club in the “Triaditsa” district, in which the chairman of the BSP – Sofia and candidate for municipal councilor Ivan Takov took part.
