Vannacci on Egonu: “There is no Italianness in his features”. And Roccella: “At the next Olympics no distinction between men and women?”

Last day of Paris 2024. The women’s national volleyball team wins the gold medal. Italian politicians congratulate the Italian athletes. Among them is the MEP of the League Roberto Vannacci: “Italy and women win, how beautiful! They have written history”. But, speaking of Paola Egonureiterates the concept expressed in his book ‘Mondo al contrario’: “I have never doubted that Paola Egonu is a very good athlete, Italian. I continue to reiterate that her physical features do not represent the majority of Italians. But I have never doubted her nationality, her skill. I am proud that she competes for us”, says Vannacci questioned by theAdnkronos. And he adds: “At the first opportunity I will also ask her for an autograph”.

The Lega Nord MEP attacks the IOC calling it ‘politicized’: “The problem is not the attack on women, but to do all the tests necessary to understand who is a woman and who is not. The IOC refused to do this, no genetic tests were done. So there were competitions, moreover in combat sports, in which in addition to the unfairness of the test there was also the risk of causing irreparable injuries to the opponent. These are Olympics in which there is a tendency to let perception prevail over reality”, comments the general and Lega Nord MEP.

Bruno Vespa and the volleyball athletes: “Black and Italian, an example of integration”. And the tweet is overwhelmed by criticism

Roccella attacks the IOC

“A new leap in quality in the attack on women,” she writes on social media Eugenia RoccallaMinister for Family, Birth Rate and Equal Opportunities. She also attacks the IOC, especially after the controversy that has hit boxing with the challenge between the Italian Angela Carini and Imane Khelif transforming the match into a political case now the minister is back on the attack. She entrusts her long reflection to social media starting from the story of the Afghan athlete disqualified for having shown a political message, “Free Afghan women”, for having shown a political message during the games. And she comments: “Regarding the controversies that have accompanied the women’s boxing competitions, the president of the Olympic Committee Thomas Bach he stated that there is no ‘scientifically solid’ system to distinguish men and women. Two sides of the same coin, which is certainly not an Olympic medal but that of a new patriarchy that attacks women by hitting them in their identity, that is, by not recognizing the reality of the sexual body”. “It is instead precisely on the bodies of women – adds Roccella – that in many parts of the world, such as Afghanistan, the most ferocious oppression is exercised, it is for their bodies that women are deprived of fundamental rights and freedoms. Questioning the sexual binary risks being a powerful endorsement of all this”.

The minister’s conclusion: “Let’s assume that at this point, for consistency, from the next Olympics the IOC will disband the refugee team, which after the disqualification of the Afghan athlete risks becoming an exercise in hypocrisy, and above all it will abolish the distinction between men’s and women’s competitions, unifying the competitions into a single ‘neutral’ gender. Because if the possibility of ‘scientifically’ distinguishing males from females is denied – she concludes -, it is clear that the male and female categories, and with them the sports competitions for women, lose all meaning”.
