Energy company Vandebron will charge customers with solar panels tens of euros extra per month. More than 70,000 customers will contribute more to the costs of returning power to the network.
After all, Vandebron incurs costs if everyone wants to feed power back to the grid with solar panels, while the sun is shining. On sunny days there is sometimes too much power available. Vandebron then has to sell the surplus on the energy market at low prices.
Until now, the costs of return delivery were borne by all customers, including those without solar panels. Vandebron thinks it is fairer if solar panel owners pay a little more. According to the energy company, it remains financially attractive to own solar panels.
A calculation example on the Vandebron website shows that the extra costs can vary from a few euros to 46 euros per month. The amount depends on how much power someone supplies back. The highest costs are for customers who annually feed back more than 5,000 kilowatt hours of electricity.
The costs go up in mid-August. Customers with a permanent contract only notice this at the end of their contract term. For customers with a variable contract, the increase will probably already be on their energy bill as of October.
Energy companies have been struggling for some time with large amounts of electricity being fed back on days when more electricity is available than needed. As a result, the power grid becomes overloaded.
Partly for this reason, the government is considering reducing the net metering scheme. This arrangement allows you to offset power generated with solar panels and consumed power against each other. And energy companies reduce their feed-in fees if you feed in more power than you use.
