The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers says it regrets what happened to the building in Ugchelen where asylum seekers are supposed to be received and calls the destruction caused “unacceptable”.

An explosive went off last night at the new emergency shelter in Ugchelen, near Apeldoorn, which should be put into use on Friday. Windows of the building are broken, the entrance is damaged and the facade is blackened. Local residents heard a loud bang. A security guard who was present in the building was unharmed.

The municipality of Apeldoorn has announced that the shelter will be put into use on Friday.

Three months of shelter

The former primary school has been set up as a temporary reception location, as an overflow for the registration center in Ter Apel. A maximum of one hundred people can stay there. The intention is for the shelter to close again at the end of the year.

The emergency shelter is located next to another primary school. Parents protested against the reception of asylum seekers close to the school. The school itself says it understands the municipality, which is prepared to provide people with shelter. Asylum seekers will only sleep there, during the day they are in Ter Apel.
