NEW YORK — A stealthy vandal moving under cover of darkness punctured about 44 vehicle tires along a stretch of two avenues in Queens over the weekend, causing thousands of dollars in damage, says the police.
It seems that the vandal, or vandals, attacked during the night. People living in the Bayside community, which has been the target of these troublesome sprees, woke up in anger Sunday to see flat tires along 42nd and 43rd avenues. They say they’ve had enough.
So far, no arrests have been made. New York City Police officers went door-to-door Sunday afternoon informing residents of any damage and looking for possible leads to the person responsible.
“It could have happened to my car too, because I park here all the time. Luckily, I parked way past this point,” one man said.
One woman says she had to replace her tires a second time. She said she had just returned her car to him on Sunday after another incident left her tires flat.
“I don’t know what to do, I’m paranoid about parking it. I bought a warranty on the tires, so if it happens again, I don’t have to pay,” she said, noting that she was left without $1,200 after the second stab. “I was furious. I really feel insecure.”
Most car owners in the neighborhood say they don’t have garages or other safe places to park. Anyone with information about this act of vandalism is asked to call NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
Manhattan got its own tire cutter earlier this year. Surveillance video showed a man cutting at least 40 tires in a neighborhood. Other tires were slashed in Chelsea hours later. It’s unclear if the cops thought the same man was after them.
