Vancouver talent’s Sedin blunder

GOTHENBURG. Did the Sedin Twins play in the 1981 JVM?
Elias Pettersson’s answer stunned his teammates.
– I felt really stupid, says the Vancouver-drafted (!) defender.
There are now two Elias Petterssons in the Vancouver Canucks organization.
The younger of them was drafted in 2022, plays back in Västerås, and has impressed in JVM’s group stage.
But when the 19-year-old, together with some teammates, took part in a quiz with Elite Prospects ahead of the tournament, things went less well.
Pettersson’s blunder
When asked which brother-slayer led Sweden to the nation’s first JVM gold in the 1980/81 season, he confidently wrote down the answer first of all: “Sedin”.
– Brother, those guys didn’t play in 1981, Axel Sandin Pellikka pointed out with a sneer.
– They may have done that, Pettersson retorted, which brought down even more laughter before he thought about it once more.
He then chuckled “they’re going to fucking slaughter me”.
Not 60 years old
Because no, Daniel and Henrik Sedin have not passed the 60 mark. They are 43 today and were born a few months before the tournament. They retired in 2018 after 18 successful seasons in Vancouver.
When Sportbladet sprinkles salt in the wound by reminding Pettersson of the fad, he smiles.
– Yes… I thought a little too quickly. I didn’t think it was so early. I felt really stupid there.
Have you had any contact with them?
– Not after that, but I’ve had it when I’ve been over there. They are really nice people, it was fun.
You think they will be lenient with your answer?
– No, I absolutely believe that I will hear it when I get there.
But you offer that?
– Obvious!
Which brothers were it actually that salvaged the historic gold, you might wonder?
The correct answer is the twins Patrik and Peter Sundström, who both represented Björklöven at the time.
