Annemiek van Vleuten has seriously crashed in the Giro Rosa, the Tour of Italy for women. Van Vleuten, leader in the general classification, was riding in a large leading group when she crashed in the last kilometer.
Van Vleuten was behind the finish line with only one hand on the wheel. Shortly after the finish, she made it clear that she has broken her left wrist. The consequences are still unknown, but the fall seems to end her Giro.
Almost two minutes head start
Van Vleuten won the second stage last weekend and took the lead in the general classification. She defended a lead of almost two minutes over Polish Katarzyna Niewiadoma.
Marianne Vos, winner of three stages in the stage race, also crashed in the same crash. How Vos is doing is unknown.
Kopecky wins stage
The Belgian Lotte Kopecky sprinted to victory. Kopecky won in Maddaloni, north of Naples. the sprint for Lizzie Deignan.
Two riders went on an adventure early in the stage. Silvia Zanardi and Ainara Elbusto took just under five minutes ahead of the peloton. Fifty kilometers before the finish, Ali Jackson, Mariia Novoldskaia and Aude Biannic joined the duo.
Novoldskaia tried it alone in the final phase, but was caught back in time, after which Kopecky, in 2017 world champion coupling race on the track, captured the stage victory.
