The painting I flew by Vincent van Gogh will be shown for the first time on Tuesday, after the work stolen in 2020 was returned in an IKEA bag five months ago. In the near future, the work will be examined in Depot Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
During a press conference, restorer Marjan de Visser will explain what damage the painting suffered during its disappearance. This damage has revealed new facts about the painter and the work.
The painting, made in 1884, shows the garden of the parsonage where Van Gogh’s parents lived. In 2020, the work was stolen from the Singer Laren museum, which at the time borrowed it from the Groninger Museum for an exhibition.
The work was stolen during the night of March 29 to 30, 2020. CCTV footage shows a man running outside with the painting under his arm after forcing the door with a sledgehammer.
Van Gogh was delivered in an IKEA bag
Art detective Arthur Brand then started looking for the painting. He was convinced that it circulated in the underworld. Valuable works are sometimes stolen to resell to criminals. They use this as an asset: in exchange for a painting, for example, they receive a significant reduction in their sentence if they are convicted of a crime.
At the beginning of September, Brand received a text from an anonymous person who claimed to have the Van Gogh. He agreed with that person I flew returned in an IKEA bag. The work has been slightly damaged and now needs to be repaired.
The press moment starts at 12 noon. In addition to De Visser, the management and experts of the Groninger Museum and the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen are also present. During the meeting it will also be announced when the painting will be on display to the public again.
