Michael van Gerwen will have surgery on his wrist in two weeks. De Brabander, who has been diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome, has to miss the World Cup of Darts as a result.
The 33-year-old Van Gerwen writes in a letter on Monday statement on Twitter that he has been suffering from tingling in his hand and arm for some time. The complaints are caused by a narrowing of the so-called carpal tunnel. That tunnel serves as a passageway for nerves and tendons that run from the forearm to the hand.
“I have been treated for a while to relieve the complaints, so that I can continue to play at a high level. But it has become clear that surgery is needed to fix the problem forever,” said Van Gerwen.
The number three in the world will be operated on Tuesday 14 June, a day after the play-offs in the Premier League in Berlin. Due to the operation, ‘Mighty Mike’ will miss the Players Championships 16 and 17 and the World Cup of Darts (June 16-19) anyway.
“It is disappointing to miss the World Cup, but my management, family and medical advisers agree that now is the right time. My participation in other tournaments in June and July is dependent on my rehabilitation. The aim is to during the World Matchplay (July 16-24, ed.) to be 100 percent again.”
The World Cup of Darts will be held in Germany this year. Van Gerwen won the country tournament for duos in 2014, 2017 and 2018 with Raymond van Barneveld. This year he would participate with Danny Noppert, who now forms a duo with Dirk van Duijvenbode.
