Van Gerwen is also surprised by Kuivenhoven at the Summer Series NOW

Michael van Gerwen was unable to give his perfect start to the Summer Series on Thursday. The Brabant number one in the world was surprised by fellow countryman Maik Kuivenhoven at the second Players Championship in the third round.

Van Gerwen almost made a nice comeback. He was partly due to the fact that Kuivenhoven missed five match darts in the eighth leg from a 2-5 deficit to 5-5, but then failed to break him in the decisive eleventh leg.

‘Mighty Mike’ also lost from Kuivenhoven the previous and until Thursday some mutual meeting. The Naaldwijker was also 6-5 too strong in the first round of Players Championship 8 in March, just before the darts were halted by the corona outbreak.

Van Gerwen took the title on the first Players Championship with impressive averages on Wednesday when the darts resumed. He then won in the final in a thriller 8-7 vs. Peter Wright.

Dartsbond PDC organizes a Players Championship every day until Sunday under the name Summer Series. The event is behind closed doors and players may only be in the play area in the MK Arena and the adjacent hotel.

All 128 participants were tested negative for the corona virus on Tuesday. They do not have to wear a mask during the competitions, but must, for example, adhere to walking routes and keep the scores themselves after a defeat.
