Van Dissel: a fourth wave is unlikely

Van Dissel says that the Netherlands is in a new, important phase due to vaccination. “But a large group of people has not yet been vaccinated, there remains a risk of infection be a lot further with vaccination before giving the ‘fire master’ signal.”

Earlier this week it was announced that the Outbreak Management Team (OMT) was taking the possibility of a fourth wave into account.

Different from last year

According to Van Dissel, the situation is different now than last year. The Netherlands then quickly relaxed for the summer, after which the virus revived. “The strict measures were the basis for the decrease in the first wave and we came in very low in terms of infections. However, almost everyone was still sensitive to infection.”

At the moment that is different, says the virologist. “Now we see a decrease due to the build-up of immunity, that is really the effect of vaccinations. As a result, you do not easily get a new peak in hospitals, that would be strange. Unless the immunity after a vaccination lasts very briefly, but that seems certainly not the case.”
