Van der Gragt became champion in the premier league with AZ and FC Twente and experienced her breakthrough at the 2017 European Championship, when she took over the position of Van den Berg in the heart of the defense after two group matches.
After that orange-colored summer, she had been playing in Amsterdam for a year. With Ajax she won the double and earned a dream transfer to Barcelona.
“Barcelona could have been, but wanted security”
In Catalonia, the tough defender suffered a lot of injuries, so her input was limited. Because of the corona pandemic, even a club like Barcelona nowadays has to keep an eye on the little ones. And so Van der Gragt, whose contract expired after two years, was put on hold.
“I enjoyed Barcelona and became a better football player. A third or a fourth year could have been possible, but I wanted security. After Spain I wanted to return to the Netherlands anyway. And so I chose Ajax.”
Additional advantage: this fall, her partner is due to give birth to their first child. And that is perhaps just a little easier in your own country.
