Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen has to undergo spinal disc surgery. During the planned routine operation in Vienna and his recovery period, Chancellor Karl Nehammer will take over official duties.

Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen will undergo a routine medical procedure in a Vienna hospital in the coming days. The reason for this is persistent disc problems that have been bothering the Federal President since the beginning of the year and have recently caused increasing complaints. As the presidential office announced in a press release on Saturday, the operation is intended to relieve pain and improve Van der Bellen’s mobility.

During the operation and the subsequent recovery period Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) temporarily the official duties of the Federal President. This regulation is intended to ensure that the functions of the head of state can be carried out without interruption. The presidential office announced that it would provide further details on the planned length of representation at the beginning of the week.

Duration of representation still open

Such medical interventions on the intervertebral disc are now considered routine operations and are widespread. The treatment is intended to relieve the nerves in the back area and make Van der Bellen pain-free in the long term.
