Van den Bergh reaches final when debuting on World Matchplay

The final of this year’s World Matchplay had a ‘usual suspect’ with Gary Anderson, but even before the second semifinal started it was clear that his opponent could not be classified under that heading. Dimitri van den Bergh and Glen Durrant both had the opportunity to make a grand final for the first time in their PDC career and because they played against each other, there were opportunities for both darts players. An exciting game was therefore in line with expectations and so the game started.

After Durrant opened the game with a lovely 151 finish, the breaks fell in the bushes and there was no sensible word to say about the outcome of the match. Only after ten legs did a hole arise and that was one in Belgian favor. Van den Bergh, like Durrant, threw an average of more than 100 points per three arrows, making him the parent in the game. With the start of the third break, The Dreammaker led two breaks (9-6) and things looked good for the Belgian.

Still tension

Durrant proved to be a fighter again. Just like in his quarterfinal match against Vincent van der Voort, he fought back in the match and after two mini-comebacks, it was the third time the Middlesbrough man had the right to ship. His third series of three consecutive legs won brought Duzza to 13-13 and thus entered an exciting final phase of the game. The Englishman could not take over the momentum and saw how Van den Bergh could handle the pressure imposed on him. The tough Belgian kept on going, took advantage of a break opportunity on 15-15 and immediately got his first ‘match point’ a leg later.
