Giovanni van Bronckhorst stops as trainer of Guangzhou R&F. The former Feyenoord coach has submitted his resignation to the Chinese club, his agent Guido Albers confirms.
“He wants to spend more time with his family,” says Albers. “Due to the strict corona rules, he hasn’t seen his family since the beginning of March. It was a great adventure in a new competition, but now it’s enough.”
Van Bronckhorst was appointed at Guangzhou R&F in January and his contract ran for another year.
Jean-Paul van Gastel, video analyst Yöri Bosschaart and conditioning coach Arno Philips also leave the club, which is in sixth place in the Chinese Super League.
Cup match is Van Bronckhorst’s last game in China
Wednesday evening’s cup match against Shandong Luneng was the last match of Guangzhou R&F led by the Dutch trainers. Partly due to a goal by Richairo Zivkovic, Van Bronckhorst’s team came back from a 2-0 deficit to 2-2, but then Shandong Luneng was better in the penalty shootout (5-4).
Guangzhou R&F was Van Bronckhorst’s second club. He was ultimately responsible at Feyenoord from 2015 to 2019, with whom he took the national title in 2017 and won two KNVB cups (2016 and 2018).
