Valve’s Restriction on Portal 64 fan game prompts developer to create new N64 game reminiscent of cult classic

New N64 Game Inspired by Arrowhead’s Cult Classic Co-op Title

Earlier this year, Valve approached developer James Lambert, known for his fan game Portal 64, and requested that he halt production on the project. Now, Lambert has shifted gears and is working on an exciting new Nintendo 64 game, drawing inspiration from Arrowhead Game Studios’ popular co-op title.

Valve Raises Concerns

Valve’s primary issue with Portal 64 was the game’s utilization of Nintendo’s proprietary development libraries, which had previously leaked but were never officially released to the public. Lambert, in response, has transitioned to using open-source alternatives. Valve, however, expressed discomfort with the idea of porting Portal 64 as it presented difficulties in tracking the project’s progress. Furthermore, changing the game’s foundation would require significant additional work.

From Magic to Wizardry

In his new Nintendo 64 game, Lambert has opted for an action platformer with a magical twist. Players take on the role of a wizard and learn various runes that can be combined to create an array of compelling spells. These spells offer a range of abilities, including the traditional fireball, as well as the ability to jump and fly.

While Lambert has not officially mentioned it as an inspiration, the concept of his game bears a resemblance to Arrowhead’s 2011 co-op game, Magicka. In Magicka, players combine a selection of different elements to craft spells with unique outcomes. The process is akin to using Helldivers 2 Stratagems, but with the delightful twist of magic spells instead of airstrikes.

Excitement Mounts

Portal 64 showcased Lambert’s technical proficiency in developing N64 titles, piquing the interest of many gamers and industry enthusiasts. Curiosity and anticipation abound as to how Lambert’s forthcoming magical adventure will unfold and captivate the gaming community.
