Valve’s 20th Anniversary: Explore the Timeline, Discounts, and Best-Selling Games on Steam

Valve has prepared for this occasion this special websitewhich represents a timeline, where each year he devotes a few words to what happened (not only) within Steam of interest and connects to it several games that were released on Steam in a given year and were among the most sold in it.

Many of these games can be bought at a discount right now, so I recommend browsing the site and seeing if you can find a title you want at a great price. The timeline page is nicely done and eyewitnesses will find it useful. And if you don’t already have some of Valve’s games, don’t miss their very discounted prices that will only be valid until September 19, 2023:

Team Fortress Classic, Half Life: Opposing Force, Half Life, Half Life 1: Source, Half-Life: Blue Shift, Half-Life 2, Half Life 2: Episode One, Half-Life 2: Episode Two

Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Portal, Team Fortress 2

Alternatively, the entire collection is available Valve Complete Pack for 10.02 EUR (93% discount)which contains 22 titles, but some are free to play and two have no discount, so the benefit depends on which games you already have and which you want.

In addition, the following thanks to all players, publishers, and developers have been posted:

While in the very beginning Steam was just an annoyance for many gamers to launch the one game they wanted to play, now 20 years later many gamers are upset if a PC game comes out first on another platform and then on Steam months later, see limited-time exclusive titles for the Epic Games Store. Steam, with its system of simple digital distribution, management of the game library and discount events, also caused many players to stop dealing with pirated versions of games and start buying them legally.

I also recommend reading these previous articles of ours that covered the history of Steam:

And this one might also be of interest:

A few years ago, there was a tendency for larger publishers to create their own platforms for digital distribution in order not to have to pay commissions to Valve from the sales of their games through Steam, but over time this effort has already declined and is gradually returning to Steam, see e.g. most recently 2 months before Blizzard’s announcement. There is no indication that anything or anyone will threaten Steam’s dominant position anytime soon. Epic does try to do this by regularly giving away games for free, but it can’t be said that it lives up to its expectations, see this recently announced escalation of its efforts to secure more limited-time exclusives.
