The detours are not too bad, Airlink is usually the easiest (even easier than Steam Link), with the least quality, Virtual Desktop (VRD) just an extra step with potentially the best quality.
You can also easily play with VRD with little lag, if you lower the quality a bit (what Steam Link and Air Link also do, only dynamically, the quality of VRD is static). The lag/latency with VRD is between 35-45ms on high quality and good AP/Router in AP mode and between 42-55ms on super high quality.
The problem with “hassle” comes when people expect too much quality from their AP/Router and PC and experience strange things while using too high settings.
That is the “advantage” of Air-link/Steam Link, they adjust quality down/up when necessary. That really doesn’t work for me, it takes me out of the immersion that VR offers, but that is of course personal.
The difference in image quality for me is very noticeable, especially with sim racing.
Here too, it seems that, just as with Streaming services versus Blu-ray, people opt for convenience and consider image quality to be of secondary importance. And that is of course allowed, but if you want high graphic quality, VRD is currently the best option.
Who knows if this will get even better in the future, we’ll see.
With SteamVR (and therefore Link), I especially find the overlay that is unnecessary and an irritation when starting games. Especially because nowadays you are forced to use the controllers of your headset. With Opencomposite/OpenXR (this is a lot of hassle to get working properly and does not work well with all games) you can get rid of that and get more performance from your PC, a difference of 10-20%.
It’s great that Steam Link is available, I hope that big steps will be made. I’m not convinced at the moment and personally think that SteamVR/Link itself is also a roundabout way.
