Valve is reported to be developing standalone VR headsets

Valve may be in the development phase of a standalone VR headset with the code name “Deckard” according to several new reports.

It is reported from several sources that evidence that Valve is developing another VR headset has been found. This alleged device is said to go under the code name Deckard and, unlike the Valve Index, should be a completely stand-alone headset for virtual reality.

The information comes from the Youtube profile Brad “SadlyItsBradleyLynch who claims to have found this evidence in various patents and applications from Valve. Also Ars Technica has reported that evidence for Deckard was found while digging through the SteamVR files.

In that case, Deckard would be a kind of challenger to Oculus Quest 2. A VR headset in a niche part of an already niche market. Exactly what Valve could do with the formula to stand out properly from Facebook’s headsets remains to be seen.

In an interview with The Verge Valve’s Greg Coomer talked about Valve’s handheld game console Steam Deck. During the interview, Coomer was asked whether the APU unit from AMD could be used to power, for example, a stand-alone VR headset. The answer should have been that the company is not ready to discuss anything regarding additional areas of use for the APU unit, but that the unit would be well suited for that particular environment.
