Valve Increases Maximum Player Count in Team Fortress 2 to 100: Chaos Ensues

Valve has increased the maximum player count of Team Fortress 2 from 32 to 100. At the same time, the company says it is not recommended to put this into practice. Videos from the institution show a chaotic scene.

It is striking that nothing else has been changed in the game to support the increased number of players; levels like 2Fort are still made for much smaller groups of players. Valve calls it optional maximum therefore ‘not supported’ and ‘not recommended’, but it is possible. Players already reported crashes with so many players, but others manage to play a game of TF2.

Valve’s multiplayer shooter, which was part of The Orange Box, is almost 16 years old. Despite the fact that the system requirements are modest by today’s standards, on a technical level the game is still not able to run smoothly on modern systems with so many players. Nevertheless, the community has responded positively to the update, in part because TF2 simply doesn’t get updates as often anymore.

In addition to the optional higher limit, a new game mode has been added that was previously unofficial: VS Saxton Hale. In this one player takes control of a very powerful character and all other players in the server have to kill him.
