Valve Announces Steam Deck OLED: Steam Deck 2 Still on the Horizon

Yesterday, Valve officially announced the Steam Deck OLED, an updated model of the original Steam Deck. While it’s not a full-fledged Steam Deck 2, it’s still a significant improvement over the February 2022 handheld version.

In an interview with IGN, Valve representative Jay Shaw said that Steam Deck 2 is still a long way off.

I don’t know. It will take some time. I think this will take a lot of time. We don’t have a specific date. I think we’ll wait until the technology is presented in a way that interests us and until the team is willing to take that leap. We’re very, very, very proud of this version of the Steam Deck, and this is it. This is the version we are most happy with and we think customers will be happy too.

He went on to say that the idea of Steam Deck 2 is something that Valve’s designers are always thinking about. This idea is constantly being discussed during brainstorming, but he confirmed that the new Steam Deck OLED is the device they want to release right now.

We’re constantly thinking about Steam Deck 2, but I think we’re satisfied that it really sets the bar high for what we wanted to do. One thing we were able to do – you can talk about this separately – but we were able to release a limited edition with a fun translucent body. I’ve been waiting for this all along. This was my number one request.

The new Steam Deck OLED models, which go on sale November 16, feature a 1200×800 HDR OLED display, a smaller APU, longer battery life, Wi-Fi 6e, and more.
