Valve Announces Pre-Christmas Surprise with Release of Steam Deck OLED: Specs and Pricing

Valve has prepared a pre-Christmas surprise for players. Already from October 16 you will be able to purchase an improved pocket model Steam Deck with HDR OLED display. The internals remain almost the same, the main exception being the battery. Instead of 40 watt hours, it has an OLED model 50 watt-hour flashlight, so the maximum endurance has increased to 12 hours. Of course, it depends on how demanding titles you will play. Instead of Wi-Fi 5, this model will have it Wi-Fi 6Ethe 7nm APU replaced the 6nm, and the package includes a power supply with a 2.5m cable instead of 1.5m.

The Steam Deck OLED will be sold in two variants. You can choose from 512GB version for €569 (approx. CZK 13,965) a 1 TB version for €679 (approx. CZK 16,655). The maximum possible internal memory has therefore been increased, but of course there is also the option to expand storage via an SD card. These are from the description of all differences compared to the original version. Along with the announcement, however, a number of tests, reviews and analyzes of the OLED model were released. The Verge for example, he writes that it has a larger and quieter fan, is 29 grams lighter and is generally better with cooling. Direct in the review they also praise improved ergonomics or louder speakers.

As the name implies, the main thing is definitely the display. In addition to being OLED with HDR support, it’s 7.4″ in size, up from 7″ on the original model. It then jumped from 60 Hz to 90 Hz. Valve directly states that the internals are essentially identical and there will be no difference in gaming performance. Test Digital Foundry however, it proves that thanks to small changes, for example, in Cyberpunk 2077, the number of FPS will increase by a few frames.

Original models discounted while supplies last

The Steam Deck OLED will basically replace the original models in the menu. Only the basic LCD will continue to be sold 256GB version with a price tag of €419. Valve also offers other variants at a discount while supplies last. 64GB sells for €369 (approx. CZK 9,050) a 512GB for €469 (approx. CZK 11,500). Like the OLED model, you can find this offer directly on the Steam website.

Limited edition for USA and Canada only

Valve has also prepared a limited edition with a transparent body for the release of the new model. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to get it, because it will be sold in very limited quantities only in the US and Canada. It will be a 1TB variant and, like the classic OLED, it will go on sale on November 16.

Valve would like more performance for Steam Deck 2.0

Both the display and the battery were fairly obvious things we wanted to make better early on,” he says in an interview with the British Eurogamer Greg Coomer, Steam Deck Designer. At the same time, he adds that they ran into trouble with OLED displays because none of the manufacturers were able to meet their requirements and they didn’t even really know what category to put the Steam Deck into. However, that has already changed since the release of the original model. And a similar case is with the technology that would be needed for a drastic increase in performance.

Hardware engineer Yazan Aldehayyat commented on this. According to him, there is no technology yet that matches Valve’s ideas. “The first Steam Deck was the first time we felt like we had enough GPU power in a portable version to let you play all the games on Steam. We would like to see the power per watt trend develop quickly to achieve the desired improvement, but we are not at that level yet.”

So we’re not just saying goodbye to Valve’s PC handhelds. However, we won’t see a legitimate successor for a few years at the earliest, so if you’ve been looking at the Steam Deck before, its new OLED version will surely make you happy as a gift under the tree.
