Valorant: streamers leave Overwatch – Golem.de

The California developer Riot Games can celebrate: The marketing of the tactical shooter Valorant is apparently currently proceeding successfully – this is indicated, among other things, by the number of viewers on Twitch and the general interest of the community. Around 1.7 million curious people watched the streams on Twitch at the start of the closed beta on April 7, 2020.

With around 1.74 million viewers, only the League of Legends, also produced by Riot Games, could attract even more players.

Thanks to Valorant, even Twitch set a new record: over 4 million customers visited the platform at the same time. The previous record was 3.99 million viewers in August 2018.

More or less parallel to the start of the beta, a noticeable number of streamers and e-athletes known in the scene also announced that they were leaving Overwatch and switching to Valorant. This has been documented, among other things the influencer Eskay on Twitter.

The most famous ex-Overwatch player is probably the professional Timo “Taimou” Kettunen from Finland, as reported by Daily Esports.

Many of the professional players are said to be dissatisfied with Overwatch because Blizzard is constantly changing the rules and making long-term training planning extremely difficult for professionals. In addition, the action game is successful; but despite the years of development work by Blizzard, the Overwatch League, for example, did not develop into a really big crowd puller, which probably has to do with the difficult-to-follow games.

Nevertheless, it is striking that so many streamers and e-athletes almost simultaneously make the difficult decision to leave their previous main game and thus at least part of the community in order to start again with a program that has not yet been established. The suspicion is obvious that Riot Games helped there, for example with money. But that is not confirmed.

Even the high numbers at Twitch did not come about easily: Riot Games had announced in advance that viewers in the vicinity of the streams could get one of the coveted keys for the beta via so-called Twitch Drops.
