Valncia activates the campaign due to the heat wave due to the increase in temperatures

The Valencia City Council will activate this Monday, June 1, the ‘heat wave’ program, in the face of “the foreseeable increase in temperatures”. Unless the weather conditions imply its modification, the program will remain active until September 30.

The Councilor for Health, Emiliano García, has urged citizens to adopt preventive measures against possible health conditions: “The objective of the campaign is to avoid, as much as possible, the serious risks of prolonged exposure to the sun, the institutions We have an obligation to put in the necessary means to do so, “he said in a statement.

The information campaign offers some tips to reduce risks from heat: drink plenty of water or liquids without waiting to be thirsty, except for medical contraindications; not consume alcoholic beverages; avoid physical and sports activities in the hottest hours; stay in cool and shady places; wear light, not tight clothing and light colors; fresh and breathable footwear; protect eyesight and cover head.

Some symptoms that can help recognize heat stroke are elevated body temperature (39.5º C in the mouth); red, hot and dry skin (no sweat); fast and stronger than normal pulse; headache; nausea; dizziness; drowsiness and intense thirst; confusion; seizures and loss of consciousness.

The health action protocol has four levels of risk. Level 0 of normal risk, level 1 of moderate risk (from 35ºC to 39ºC), level 2 of high risk (from 39ºC to 41ºC), level 3 of extreme risk (from 41ºC) . Each level is associated with a color, respectively, green, yellow, orange and red.

Through the General Directorate of Public Health and the Foundation Center for Environmental Studies of the Mediterranean (CEAM), risk maps will be prepared on a daily basis in order to carry out the functions of information and direct intervention on vulnerable populations.

The population groups most vulnerable to exposure to excessive temperatures, among others, are: children, pregnant women, the elderly, those with chronic underlying diseases and those at risk or in a situation of social exclusion. Most of the mortality occurs in people with serious health problems (cardiovascular, respiratory and cerebrovascular), especially in the elderly.
