Valledupar celebrates Wetlands Day with release of species

This Friday, February 2, the International Day of Wetlands was commemorated worldwide, an initiative that aims to encourage the protection and conservation of these water spaces in the world.

According to the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, natural spaces play an important function for the vitality of humanity and the good environmental development of the planet.

The date was established in 1971 to promote, in the 168 countries where wetlands are identified, a rational use that can contribute to extending the permanence of ecosystems.

In this sense, the Mayor’s Office of Valledupar, the Government of Cesar and Corpocesar, released six species of fauna animals, as a way to commemorate the important day worldwide.

From the department of Cesar we have been holding planting sessions in previous years, but we are also reviewing the different projects that are aimed at repopulation, improving habitat conditions, in themselves a series of actions that lead to the conservation and protection of these “strategic ecosystems that are wetlands”said Melissa Gómez, Secretary of the Environment of Cesar.

The representative activity took place in the city’s Sicarare wetland, where a cleanup day led by environmental authorities also took place.

Among the species released was a babilla, two boas and three hicoteas, which were left in their natural habitat.

According to research carried out by environmentalists, Colombia is considered a country with a wide wealth of water sources, basins with 60% of the world’s moors and more than 31,000 wetlands that are distributed throughout the national territory.
