Valeria Lynch beat Michael Jackson’s sister (Video: The Perfect Night/El Trece)
Throughout her career, Valeria Lynch managed to captivate not only the national public, but also was a hit in the United States, Japan, Italy and other parts of the world. Invited to La Noche Perfecta (El Trece), hosted by Sebastián Wainraich, she reviewed her great career and recalled an anecdote that links her to La Toya Jackson, the older sister of singer Michael Jackson.
One of the segments of the late show consists of the host presenting three anecdotes from the guest’s life and the guest choosing one to never tell again. “When you won a singing contest against one of the members of the family of the most famous singer in the world, when you had a close encounter with an alien spaceship and when Diego Armando Maradona came to see you at a concert in Italy,” were the options given by the host and the singer of “Qué ganas de no verte nunca más” chose the first one.
The situation dates back to 1985, when Lynch left for Japan to take part in the Yamaha Tokyo Festival, where she faced various international artists: “In the first round when I was eliminated, the jury was half-buying and they said that if they don’t vote as the contest should be, the festival will end,” Valeria began by saying, surprising the comedian. During the press conference, held in the first weeks of the program, she met La Toya and then sensed that they wanted her to win so that her brother could go to the celebration.
“They had La Toya as the winner so that Michael would agree to go, so everything was for her. At the press conference, the Argentine ambassador in Japan took me by the hand and said ‘here are all the journalists’,” she recalled, adding that one of the journalists present could not interview her, since one had been scheduled with Jackson: “It’s okay, when I win I won’t give you the interview,” was the blonde’s response.
Valeria Lynch was crowned winner of the Yamaha Festival in 1985
This festival was made up of 23 representatives from around the world and after the jury refused to sell their vote, things changed and the singer of “Señor amante” was crowned the winner: “The first round came, the jury told Mr. Yamaha that and everything changed, they voted as they really had to vote, so I started to go through rounds and rounds, and I won the contest as best performer and the Grand Prix, which is the highest prize given for the song,” Lynch recalled.
Once she was crowned the winner, the first person who approached her to interview her was the same journalist who refused to interview her because he was giving priority to the American singer: “You don’t know how much I enjoyed it, he approached me and said ‘we can do the interview you wanted’,” she said, before confessing that she refused to talk to him. “I beat La Toya,” she concluded, grateful not to have to tell the story again in the future.
As expected, the composer did not miss the opportunity to dazzle everyone present with her voice, but this time it was as a joke: she gave a sung message to Sebastián on behalf of her coworkers. Despite it being a joke, her talent was present and she was applauded by everyone who was in the studio, including some of her fans, who showed up with the intention of supporting her during the recording of the program.
