The Quebec Retail Council (CQCD) collaborated with ORAMA Marketing to survey consumers on their purchasing intentions for Valentine’s Day.
Despite the difficult economic context, more Quebecers (34%) intend to make purchases for this holiday, compared to actual purchases made last year (26%). However, the people surveyed think they will pay, on average, $178 compared to $278 in 2022. This would be a drop of 35% in two years.
These purchasing intentions vary greatly depending on the demographic profile of consumers. Proportionally, more women (35%) are considering purchases than men (30%). Age also seems to have a strong impact, since 42% of young people aged 18 to 24, compared to 35% of those aged 35 to 44 and 22% of people aged 65 and over, plan to spend For Valentine’s Day. Also, generally speaking and not surprisingly, the higher the household income, the more the percentage follows the same curve.
Couples with children at home are those who plan to spend the most on the event (47%), compared to 38% for couples without children and 25% for a single-parent family with children.
Finally, consumers intend to spend a larger amount for a hotel reservation ($274), jewelry ($234), a moment at the SPA ($127) and clothes ($124).
