Valentine’s Day: History, Traditions, and Celebration in Ukraine and Around the World – All You Need to Know

The most romantic holiday of winter can rightfully be called Valentine’s Day or Valentine’s Day. Couples look forward to it to talk about their feelings and exchange gifts. Has the date of Valentine’s Day changed according to the new calendar?

Traditionally Valentine’s Day the whole world is celebrating The 14th of February. And even after the transition of the OCU and the UGCC to a new calendar, which took place on September 1, 2023, this holiday did not change its date in Ukraine.

There have been no changes because the holiday has a fixed date. According to tradition, lovers spend this day together, preparing each other all kinds of gifts and pleasant surprises. The main attributes of the holiday are heart-shaped cards, soft toys, chocolate and flowers.

Valentine’s Day: History

Many different myths and legends were formed around this holiday, so the story has long been erased from people’s memory. In most legends, the holiday was created in honor of the early Christian martyr Saint Valentine, who was a bishop in the Italian city of Terni and lived in the 3rd century.

According to the most popular version, the celebration of Valentine’s Day began around 270 in the Roman Empire, when Claudius II was emperor. The emperor was fighting a long war and did not want his soldiers to marry. He believed that love and family universities made them weak. However, the clergyman Valentin secretly married couples in love. And when the ruler found out about this, they seized the saint, threw him into prison and decided to execute him for “anti-state” activities. On the night before his execution (February 14, approximately 269), he wrote a love letter to the prison warden’s daughter, with whom he was in love. He signed it “Your Valentine.” This is where the tradition of signing “Valentines” came from – cards in the shape of a heart.

Valentine’s Day was founded in 496 by Pope Gelasius I to supplant the pagan holiday of Lupercalia, which fell annually on February 15th. On this day, people sacrificed goats and male goats. The image of St. Valentine was supposed to emphasize the spiritual love between a man and a woman.

How Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Ukraine and other countries of the world

Usually on Valentine’s Day, lovers have a romantic dinner, exchange gifts, and make pleasant surprises. In Ukraine, it is customary to give chocolate, jewelry, soft toys, and bouquets of flowers. But every country has its own interesting traditions.

So, in France, jewelry and jewelry are considered the best gifts, but in Denmark, white dried flowers are given to loved ones. In Italy, the holiday is usually called “sweet day”, because Italians usually give sweets and cakes with doves.

In the Netherlands there is an interesting tradition according to which a woman can propose to her beloved. If a man wants to refuse, he says that he will give her a silk dress. In Jamaica, “naked weddings” are often held on Valentine’s Day, during which the couple wears only their wedding rings.

There are also countries where Valentine’s Day is prohibited. These are, in particular, Saudi Arabia and Iran. Here they believe that the holiday is a propaganda of sexuality and depravity.
