Valentin Kardamski: Are Europe and the USA playing with fire in the Balkans? – 2024-03-05 16:48:34

/ world today news/ For the last six months, the relations between the peoples of Bulgaria and North Macedonia have deteriorated to such an extent that the comparison that we are brothers is subconsciously felt as enemies. At his head, Prime Minister Kiril Petkov decided to first remove the veto for starting their negotiations for EU membership, and finally to wait for the sidekick from Skopje to keep his promises to us. At first glance, it appears that Kiril Petkov, with assertive stupidity and political weightlessness, is sabotaging the measures of symbiosis between European leaders and the US for the European integration of North Macedonia.

But is it so?

I do not dispute the redundancy of Petkov, but I question the real desire of Europe, understand America, to start negotiation processes with North Macedonia, Albania and Serbia. If they were sincere in their intentions, the Brussels officials would not have left Skopje and would have pulled the ears of the local authorities with or without reason, and they would not have thought of spewing frank nonsense against Bulgaria on a daily basis. Would it have occurred to them to set fire to our Cultural Center in Bitola? And after the cynical provocation, would the authorities of North Macedonia fail to apologize? How do you imagine if Brussels pressured our neighbors so much to enter the EU, let them make fools of us all for days, that they couldn’t recognize from the video footage who the arsonist was, and he was a famous singer of theirs? In fact, the tendentious passivity of Europe towards the self-will of the Macedonians towards us and their ultimate tone to give way for their entry into the EU generates hatred and hatred in Bulgarians towards Skopje.

And also, a few days ago, in a meeting with the Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz ultimatum insisted on two things if Belgrade wants to join the EU – firstly, to recognize the independence of the self-proclaimed Republic of Kosovo and secondly, to join the sanctions against Russia and anti-Russian rhetoric. The wringing of hands caused a wave of indignation among the Serbs, for whom the topic of the secession of Kosovo is particularly painful to this day, and in relation to the Russians, they see them as a fraternal Slavic people, about whom they do not allow a bad word to be spoken, especially in the most their new story.

Do the topics on which Scholz is stirring up tension in Belgrade sound familiar?

One more little touch. A few days ago, Greek Prime Minister Konstantinos Mitsotakis presented his colleagues from Macedonia and Albania to the German Chancellor. Then Edi Rama, with a frivolity unthinkable for diplomacy, mocked in front of the cameras with his colleague Dimitar Kovachevski that he was the prime minister of the future Western Bulgaria. Instead of keeping an icy expression on Rama’s fat joke, Scholz ecstatically…laughed!

Yes, the escalation of tension between the Balkan countries and peoples has not reached a boiling point. And I hope it doesn’t come to that. Because precisely the Balkans are the powder keg in Europe. The failure in the European integration of North Macedonia, Albania and Serbia may be the result of the complete misunderstanding and ignorance of today’s European leaders and the USA of the specifics of relations in this region.

But it can also be a well thought out and planned policy and part of a much bigger game!

We leave the Balkans for just a little bit and move to Haiti. As well as being known for its natural disasters and drug mafia, the Caribbean country is a victim of unrelenting political crisis, brutal corruption and murderous banditry. In March 2011, like the actor Zelensky in Ukraine, the pop singer Michel Martelly, called Sweet Mickey by his fans, was elected president of Haiti. Since the end of his term, this same Cute Mickey has been cited as synonymous with corruption. He is accused of accepting millions of dollars in bribes to secure the participation of specific foreign construction firms in the reconstruction of the country devastated by the 2010 earthquake. To this day, thousands of collapsed homes have not been rebuilt, and promises of billions of dollars in aid have sunk into oblivion. Above all, Martelly restored the armed forces that marked Haiti’s history with military coups, disbanded with great effort in 1991. In 2015, when his term as president expired, there was no successor, as the election was annulled due to suspicions of serious fraud. Only a year later, the head of state of Haiti became Jovenel Moise, who was brutally shot on July 7 last year in his home, and the first lady died a little later from her wounds. In one of the first press conferences since the attack, Haiti’s national police chief Leon Charles said at least four of the president’s attackers were foreign nationals. To this day, the execution of the island nation is shrouded in mystery, and it is not clear how true the speculation is that the US was heavily involved in its planning. In early January of this year, an attempt was made to shoot Prime Minister Ariel Henri during a celebration of the anniversary of Haiti’s independence. So far unsuccessful.

Why did I stop at Haiti? Just a few days ago, it became clear that in place of Hero Mustafa, President Joe Biden named Kenneth Merton as her successor. Curiously, he was the island nation’s ambassador from 2009 to 2012, and it was during his tenure that Sweet Mickey was elected president of Haiti. Merton’s diplomatic biography highlights his professional engagements at the US Embassy in Port-au-Prince for three terms.

To the question, whether if Hero Mustafa was a representative of soft American diplomacy, then Merton would be the iron fist, the answer will crystallize soon after taking over his mission in Sofia. Then we will find out exactly what the US plans are for Bulgaria and with what mechanisms it will achieve them.

Did I forget to mention that in addition to being a seething cauldron of constant political upheaval, permanent street gang warfare, and gruesome executions, Haiti is also the poorest country in the entire Western Hemisphere?
