Valenciennes: two residents marry in retirement homes, after 50 years of secret love – 24/11/2022

It’s never too late to get married! And it’s not Liliane and Andrée who will say otherwise. Aged 72, the two ladies united in front of the mayor of Valenciennes, Laurent Degallaix, on November 15.

“This important decision made this summer thus finds its full realization just before the end of year celebrations. Thanks to the brides for giving me the opportunity to be a privileged actor in this union. A magnificent story, especially as the two brides say that they’ve been in a relationship since the age of 25. A relationship they’ve kept secret.” reacted the mayor of Valenciennes.

They didn’t know gay marriage was legal.

Both located in the town of Notre-Dame d’Aubry-du Hainaut, the two ladies met at the age of 11. It was 1961 and they have never left each other since.

Fortunately, customs are changing, mentalities are freeing themselves, just like Liliane and Andrée. Sharing the same room at the EHPAD in Valenciennes since 2017, no one ever knew they were in love!

Worse still, the two concerned did not think same-sex marriage was possible in France. However, the law has authorized it since 2013 on the mandate of François Hollande. It was when they recently discovered that Andrée made a request to Liliane for her.
