Valencia: Woman rescued after 3 days trapped in car – at least 211 dead –

The death toll from the deadly floods that hit the Valencia region has exceeded 210, with rescuers racing against time to find missing people. The response of the volunteers who arrive for help from every corner of Spain and walk kilometers through the mud to reach the flooded areas is touching. 10,000 soldiers are helping the search and victims.

Hopes of finding survivors in flooded basements and swept away cars are fading, but efforts to free trapped people and locate missing people continue unabated in all affected areas of Valencia.

“There are injured and people still trapped and we have to save them. There are a lot of infections because they have wounds and some of them stayed with their feet in the mud for four days,” said medical student Luthia Lopez.

Thousands of firefighters, police, national guards and volunteers are meticulously checking every spot even with sticks in the rivers or pulling out cars buried in the mud.

“We don’t know what they have inside and people may be trapped,” said a volunteer.

The moment when the Civil Protection announces the rescue of a woman in Benetússer after spending three days in a car is touching.

Responding to the request of the local government, President Sanchez has increased to 10,000 the force of police and national guard that will be deployed in the affected areas.

“I know that the response given is not enough. I know that. I know that there are serious problems and shortages, that there are still broken services, municipalities buried in mud, desperate people looking for their relatives. I know we have to do better and we have to give everything,” the Spanish Prime Minister emphasized.

The huge response of volunteers of all ages and origins, even foreigners who arrive on foot to the disaster areas to help in any way, is touching.

At the same time, aid in drinking water, food, medicine and basic necessities is concentrated in Valencia.

Climate change also contributed to the most devastating flood in the history of modern Spain and the deadliest in Europe since 1970.
