Valencia Region of Spain Reinstates Mandatory Face Masks in Hospitals to Combat Flu Spike

The Valencia region in Spain recently decided to make face masks mandatory again in hospitals due to an explosive increase in flu cases. The measure is intended to protect vulnerable patients and healthcare workers against infection.

Of regional government of Valencia, led by the regional Ministry of Health, introduced the measure. They also follow national guidelines about it wearing face masks. But why is the regional government making face masks mandatory again?

There is currently one spike in respiratory infections in the Valencia region. Last week there were 1,501 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. In addition, the number of people infected with Covid has also increased, but it is mainly a measure to prevent the flu virus.

That is why the regional government has decided to take additional measures, such as mandatory face masks at the following locations and for the following people:

  • Symptomatic persons in shared spaces
  • Healthcare workers treating symptomatic patients
  • Intensive care and departments with vulnerable patients
  • Emergency rooms and GP clinics
  • Waiting rooms

Hospitals can also make face masks mandatory in other places if they deem this necessary. Hospitals play a crucial role in… combating the flu epidemic. At the same time, patients and employees are at additional risk.

The increase of it number of flu patients causes crowds in hospitals. Operations must be postponed to free up capacity. Additional staff must also be deployed.

The regional government wants the face mask measure vulnerable groups in hospitals better protection. The elderly, chronically ill and people in poor health are particularly at risk.

Flu is one contagious disease which occurs annually in winter. It is caused by the influenza virus. Flu spreads easily and quickly, especially in places where many people gather. That is why hospitals are extra susceptible.

Typical flu symptoms are: coughing, sneezing, sore throat, fever, muscle pain and fatigue. It usually takes a week or two.

For healthy persons flu is usually harmless. But it can be dangerous for the elderly, chronically ill and overweight people. In the worst case it can lead to death.
