Val-d’Or Announces Indefinite Evacuation of Sectors Due to Out-of-Control Forest Fire

Title: Major Forest Fire Forces Evacuation of Three Sectors in Val-d’Or

Date: June 20, 2023

The City of Val-d’Or in northwestern Quebec has announced the evacuation of three sectors due to a major forest fire that has once again become “out of control.” The evacuation, which is expected to last for an indefinite period, was prompted by the evolution of fire 297, according to information from the Society for the Protection of Forests against Fire (SOPFEU).

The sectors affected by the evacuation are Lac Gueguen, Lac Matchi-Manitou, and Lac Villebon. Residents in these areas were instructed to evacuate their premises starting at 7 p.m. The fire, which started on June 1 due to lightning, has now spread to an area of 19,506 hectares, east of the city. It was previously considered “contained” until recent developments.

To ensure the safety of evacuees, the city’s fire safety service will be present at the Chimo Road exit to register individuals. Those unable to reach the site are advised to register with municipal authorities by calling 819 824-9613 ext. 0 or emailing communications@ville.valdor.qc.ca.

This marks the second evacuation operation in a few weeks for the affected sectors. On June 3, the city declared a state of emergency due to poor air quality and two uncontrolled nearby fires, which also led to evacuations in the Louvicourt and Lake Wyeth areas. However, citizens in other sectors of Val-d’Or are currently unaffected, as SOPFEU has confirmed that no forest fire is threatening the urban territory.

The City of Val-d’Or urges all residents, whether permanent or seasonal, to provide the names of occupants, the address subject to evacuation, a telephone number, the current location address, and confirmation of their evacuation. This information will assist in ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals affected by the ongoing forest fire.

As the situation continues to evolve, residents are advised to stay updated through official channels and follow the instructions provided by local authorities. The City of Val-d’Or remains committed to the safety and welfare of its residents during this challenging time.
