Loucif Hamani, Algerian boxing champion, is dead. Living in Vitry-sur-Seine (Val-de-Marne), he had made the heyday of the boxing club of Choisy-le-Roi . He was 71 years old.
27 fights, 24 victories
Born in 1950 in Igoufaf, in the town of Ait Yahia, Algeria, Hamani immigrated early to France with his family who followed his father, a factory worker in the Paris region. It was then that he began to practice boxing. He discovered the noble art at Choisy-le-Roi, in the Val de Marne : “I was barely eight years old when I started to attend the boxing hall of Choisy-le-Roi”, he confided last June to the Algerian daily Freedom.
From the start, he proved to be very formidable in the ring and began to record successes. In 1976, at the age of 26, he was consecrated African ABU super welterweight champion against Ivorian Sea Robinson and managed to retain his title the following year against Simon Bereck Rifoey.
Three years later, in 1980, he lost his fight against the American Marvin Hagler for the title of world champion by losing by a knockout in the second round. In 1985, Hamani ended his professional career, after 27 fights including 24 won and 03 lost and a record of 07 times Algerian champion, Maghrebian champion, gold medalist in African games and Mediterranean games and twice champion of ‘Africa.
The mayor of Vitry-sur-Seine, where he lived for a long time, Pierre Bell-Lloch (PCF), paid tribute to him on Wednesday.
The Prime Minister, Minister of Finance of Algeria, Aïmene Benabderrahmane also sent a message of condolence to the family of Algerian boxer Loucif Hamani on Wednesday.
