And major fire took place in the town of Villejuif (Val-de-Marne), this Sunday, December 5, 2021, causing several injuries. A controversy was also born because of conditions of intervention of firefighters. Explanations.
Several people relocated
According to Paris fire brigade15 people were rescued from being trapped in a building during an apartment fire in Villejuif. 200 firefighters went to the site in the Léo-Lagrange district, avenue de Paris, to put an end to the disaster. About sixty vehicles were also mobilized.
The incident occurred in an apartment on the second floor, in a building that has 5. According to the Paris Seine Civil Protection, about thirty people involved were welcomed and cared for in a gymnasium by volunteers. One person was seriously injured, five others were slightly intoxicated by the fumes.
“Some residents were taken to the hospital for checks and the others were taken to the Pasteur school and taken care of by Civil Protection. With the services of the City, we urgently organized the rehousing of all the victims to whom I reiterate my support and the assurance of the total commitment of the municipality at their side”, declared the mayor, Pierre Garzon (PCF).
A controversy between elected officials
More unusual thing, the fire of this apartment in Villejuif was the occasion of a pass of arms between the municipality and its opposition. The cause ? The conditions of intervention of the firefighters on site. Indeed, the members of the opposition group Villejuif Rassembly, led by Christel Esclangon (Modem) and where is the former mayor Franck LeBohellec (LR), deplored the presence of illegally parked vehicles: “For months and months, citizens have been warning the town hall and challenging elected officials via social networks that illegal parking is a real problem in this sector. Today, the emergency is real and the firefighters are literally hampered in their rescue work because of all these badly parked vehicles,” they say.
“In fact, with the municipal police, when it still existed, the night brigade accompanied the firefighters in their interventions to contribute to the establishment of a safety circle, to facilitate traffic and access and to put in contact with the city services and solidarity associations,” adds Franck Le Bohellec.
The mayor, Pierre Garzon, deplores this controversy: “I would like to express to you my indignation at the comments made. I will stop there, our City deserves much better,” he said.
