Vaccines May Relieve Long-Term Symptoms of Covid-19

Suara.com – A preprint study in England stated that vaccine provide protection to former patients Covid-19 with long term symptoms.

Launching from Healthline, researchers followed 66 Covid-19 patients who were hospitalized who had symptoms that lasted up to 8 months. At least 44 participants were vaccinated and 22 participants did not.

People who received the Covid-19 vaccine experienced small overall improvement in long-term Covid-19 symptoms compared to patients who were not vaccinated. About 23 percent of vaccinated patients reported that their symptoms improved, compared with about 15 percent of unvaccinated people.

In addition, fewer people who are vaccinated see worsening symptoms.

The researchers saw no difference in responses between people who received the Pfizer-BioNTech or Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines. They researched with the Moderna vaccine.

This study is observational, so it cannot show that a vaccine is responsible for the long-term improvement of Covid-19 symptoms. Other factors can affect the results.

It’s not clear why a vaccine can reduce the symptoms of long-standing Covid-19, but immunologist Yale Akiko Iwasaki, PhD, states that people with lingering Covid-19 symptoms may still have a live coronavirus in their body which is known as a reservoir for the virus. The strong immune response caused by the Covid-19 vaccine can eliminate any remaining viruses, which will reduce symptoms.

Another possibility is that Covid-19 can cause an autoimmune disease in some people in which immune cells mistakenly attack the body’s own cells. In these cases, the vaccine may provide temporary relief from an inappropriate immune response.

This may explain why some people who feel better after vaccination find that their old Covid-19 symptoms return after a few weeks.

Even so, the researchers state that more research is needed. Nor has this study been peer reviewed.
