Health professionals may not deny the vaccine due to considerations of possible dose wastage due to lack of a minimum number of people to be inoculated.
Due to the fact that there is less and less population left to be vaccinated, the Minister of Health, Fernando Ruiz, spoke about cases of having open vials and not having the target population to be immunized, according to the number of doses in each bottle.
“A Colombian cannot be denied the vaccine for the reason of not being able to open bottles because we are going to waste vaccines. That is absolutely clear in Colombia (…) People’s lives come first in the face of the possibility of wasting vaccines,” ordered the minister at the closing of the last Unified Command Post on Covid-19.
According to the Head of the Health portfolio, in Colombia the vaccine cannot be denied due to possible dose wastage when the vaccination post does not have the minimum number of people to be inoculated.
Previously, the open vial policy stated that the biologic containing a certain number of doses should be used immediately in the same number of people, after opening the jar.
“Once we reach 100% vaccination coverage, it will necessarily happen that we will have to open bottles and doses will probably expire, waiting for only one person to arrive who we can vaccinate, because the rest of the people they do not arrive because they are already vaccinated”, explained the minister.
