Vaccines Are Not The Only Solution To End Pandemics

Jakarta, Beritasatu.com – Professor of Molecular Biology from Airlangga University, Chairul Anwar Nidom said that vaccines are not the only solution to end a pandemic Covid-19. Given that, not all virus interventions can be approached with vaccines. As can be seen from the cases of MERS, SARS, Ebola, HIV, and now he also predicts SARS-CoV-2 or Covid-19.

“Now we have to think critically, SARS alone cannot be made a vaccine, really now there is an approach with vaccines, what are the advantages? We have to be careful, as virology researchers, we are researching the Covid virus that has been in Indonesia so far. It turns out that we found that characters in Indonesia have motives antibody-dependent enhancement or ADE that cannot be approached with vaccines, ”explained Chairul Anwar Nidom when contacted by Suara Pembaruan, Tuesday (6/10/2020).

The head of the ADE Professor Nidom Foundation’s Laboratory team explained, ADE is an event in which antibodies are not effective at neutralizing the targeted virus, so that the virus can still enter the cell and together it actually makes the infection in the cell worse.

ADE has been shown to trigger the severity of post-vaccination in the case of Dengue vaccine candidates. Then, he called the variant G mutation that made SARS-CoV-2, the virus corona The cause of Covid-19, believed to be more contagious recently is a form of ADE.

“In the ADE structure there is a D614G mutation which has also been detected in Malaysia. This mutation of the virus has an infectious rate of 10 times faster. We are worried that the high hopes for this vaccine do not suddenly turn into disappointment and new calamity,” he said.

According to him, there is still time to insert ADE research into clinical trials that are being carried out in Indonesia, such as the Sinovac Biotech vaccine. If the suspicion is correct, that the Covid-19 virus can cause the ADE phenomenon, he hopes that researchers can immediately move to improve the structure or components of the vaccine.

“If indeed said Prof. Kusnandi Rusmil (Chair of the Covid-19 Vaccine Clinical Trial Research Team from the Faculty of Medicine, Padjajaran University), the ADE phenomenon has become a concern in research on the development of the Covid-19 vaccine, it is good news. Now it is only time for them to carry out their moral obligation to publish data. which they have studied, because this is for the community, “he explained.

Previously in a separate place, Prof. Kusnandi Rusmil had denied that the ADE phenomenon occurred in the Covid-19 virus attack. He believes ADE is an event in which antibodies are not effective at neutralizing the targeted viruses so that the viruses can still enter cells, and together they actually make the infection in the cells worse.

Kusnandi emphasized that the ADE phenomenon has become a concern in research on the development of the Covid-19 vaccine, including the Sinovac Biotech vaccine, whose clinical trial research in Bandung is led by Kusnandi.

“ADE has so far only been seen in dengue and the like and not in other viruses,” he said in a written statement, Monday (5/10/2020).

He said that the ADE phenomenon seen in the cases of MERS, SARS, Ebola, and HIV was only found in silico and in vitro or experiments in laboratory petri dishes.

For SARS-CoV-2, according to Kusnandi, it has been investigated since pre-clinical trials and existing vaccine candidates were declared safe from the ADE phenomenon. In neither the mice nor the monkeys which were the experimental models, there were no pathologies in the blood or lungs that would have occurred if the effect of ADE was present.

“Currently, more than 140 vaccine candidates have been made, some of which are in human clinical trials, and until now there is no evidence of ADE. However, vigilance and monitoring of vaccine safety must still be done, “said Prof. Kusnandi.
